HE URINAL is an endurance performance in direct dialogue with Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain.
For 6–7 hours each day, the artist sits on a toilet placed on top of a 115 cm high plinth. Surrounded by glass bottles of water, she drinks and urinates, gradually creating a visible wall of urine inside the front of the plinth.
By returning the readymade to its intended function, THE URINAL transforms Duchamp’s fountain into a living fountain, with the female body no longer positioned beside the water source as decoration or symbol, but becoming the source itself.
Turning a private, mundane act into a public spectacle, the performance reflects on the erosion of boundaries between private and public life. In a world shaped by social media and surveillance capitalism, our attention, behaviour and personal routines have increasingly become something to observe, monetize and consume.
Life as a product. Life as a readymade object.
