Welcome to a free evening walk through downtown Reykjavík, exploring the places associated with Halldór Laxness and his works.
The tour will be led by Halldór Guðmundsson, literary scholar and author of a biography of Halldór Laxness. Participants will follow the traces of Laxness’s life and writings in central Reykjavík. The walk includes his birthplace and several locations in the city center where he lived as a young man or frequently visited.
Although Laxness did not write many novels set in Reykjavík, the tour will visit sites connected to works such as The Fish Can Sing (Brekkukotsannáll) and The Atom Station (Atómstöðin), among others.
The walk will shed light on Laxness’s relationship with the capital, which was home to fewer than seven thousand residents when he was born.
The tour begins at 20:00 at Laugavegur 32 and will be conducted in Icelandic. It lasts approximately 1½ hours.
This evening walk is part of the Evening Walks series, a collaborative project between the Reykjavík City Library, the Reykjavík City Museum, and the Reykjavík Art Museum. The evening walks take place on Thursdays throughout the summer months and are completely free of charge. Everyone is warmly welcome. The full 2026 Evening Walks programme can be found here:
