ABOUT BONNIE J JENSEN:

New Zealand–born, long time Sydney-based Bonnie J Jensen is a jazz singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger and teacher, celebrated for her emotional intelligence, stylistic range, and fearless musicality. A commanding live performer with deep, powerfully athletic vocals and a gift for storytelling, Jensen is widely regarded as one of Australia’s most distinctive jazz voices.

An accomplished songwriter and arranger, Jensen also contributes original works that sit seamlessly alongside the classics. Her compositions reveal a sharp ear for colour, a deep feel for the blues, and a direct emotional honesty that has become a hallmark of her sound.

Collaboration lies at the heart of Jensen’s music and she is renowned for assembling elite ensembles of Australia’s leading jazz musicians.

After releasing four critically acclaimed albums in the 2000s, Jensen returned to recording after a 15-year hiatus with her fifth album, RISE — a comeback hailed as one of her most accomplished artistic statements. RISE presents a masterfully curated collection of jazz compositions that span a rich array of styles and influences. Featuring works by legendary composers such as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Michael Franks, the album also highlights two compelling original pieces by Jensen. Three standout tracks—Cantaloupe Island, Reminiscing, and Spend a Little Time with Me—were arranged for big band (The Dan Barnett Big Band) by Graham Jesse/Andrew Robertson. The remaining nine tracks showcase the accomplished and nuanced interplay of Jensen’s sextet, comprised of A-list Australian talents: Matt McMahon (piano and keyboards), Brett Hirst (bass), Nicholas McBride (drums) Graham Jesse (saxes and flutes), and Ray Cassar (trumpet).
